Me With a Friendly Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur

About Me

Welcome. And thank you for visiting my photo galleries!

My name is Jonas Tonboe Christiansen and I am a photographer taking the majority of my photos during my travels around the world. I prefer destinations "off the beaten track" because these places usually offer great adventure and unique photographic opportunities. My favourite continent is Africa which I have visited more than 25 times. This continent is enormous and has so much to offer.

I am interested in wildlife, landscape, architecture and travel photography.

I have a passion for photographing endangered or threatened animal species, and through my photos I hope to stimulate people's interest in these animals and raise awareness about conservation and the protection of species and their habitats. To me wildlife photography is interesting because of the inherent unpredictability of this type of photography: You might only have a few seconds to take a photo, and often the conditions under which a photo is taken are very difficult. My aim is to photograph wildlife as authentically as possible and to do a minimum amount of post-processing. I do not like arranged and over-processed wildlife photos.

With landscape photography, I have become increasingly interested in more creative techniques which I have started to explore: Using filters - preferably Neutral Density, Graduated Neutral Density and Polariser filters - and long exposures to produce more "artistic" results. Also, using focus stacking and panorama stitching to create results that would otherwise be impossible to obtain in a single exposure.

With architecture photography, I love capturing unusual angles using an ultra wide angle - rectilinear, not fish eye - lens.

What keeps me interested in photography is that it is a continuous learning process. Being a great photographer requires technical proficiency but also creativity and the ability to "think outside the box". The quality of images can always be improved and there are plenty of new areas and techniques to explore.

Ever since I got my first SLR in 1988, a Canon EOS 650, I've used Canon camera equipment. In 2005 I switched to digital with the purchase of a Canon EOS 10D DSLR. Since then I have continuously upgraded to newer models to reap the benefits of better sensor quality, better AF capabilities etc. In 2021 I got my first interchangeable-lens mirrorless camera, the Canon R5. I love the ergonomics, user interface and performance of the Canon camera bodies. And in my opinion the versatility and quality of the Canon L lenses is unparalleled by any other manufacturer. In addition to Canon camera gear, I use Really Right Stuff camera support gear (tripod, head, plates, clamps etc.) and LEE Filters.

I do the majority of my editing in Adobe Camera Raw and minor edits and batch processing in Adobe Photoshop. I use Topaz Labs DeNoise AI to remove noise from images and Topaz Labs Sharpen AI to sharpen images.

Professionally, I've been working 20+ years in the airline IT industry. Traveling and photography is my way of charging up my batteries.

Feel free to browse my galleries or have a look at my own personal nature favourites and personal mankind favourites. As all my photos are keyworded, you can also search for photos or look up photos by keyword(s). And please do visit again soon - I will continuously add more photos to this site.
